Petition seeks military burial for JROTC cadet killed in Florida shooting

The Parkland community is petitioning the government to give a full honors military funeral to the slain 15-year-old junior Cadet student who helped students flee danger during the Florida school shooting last week.

Peter Wang spent the last moments of his life protecting classmates and teachers during the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week.

However, a White House petition created this week requesting a military funeral honor for Wang is quickly gaining steam. Two other JROTC cadets killed Wednesday are receiving the honor as well - Alaina Petty, who was laid to rest Monday, and Martin Duque, whose service is on Saturday. According to his friends, he was shot repeatedly while holding a door open to let other people escape.

Wang's "selfless and heroic actions have led to the survival of dozens in the area". Petitions need 100,000 signatures in 30 days in order to get an official response by the White House.

According to WTVJ, an emotional service was punctuated by the eulogies of several classmates whose lives Wang touched.

"I want people to know he died a hero".

Peter Wang's mother, Hui, cries as she is helped into a waiting auto with her family after the memorial service for her 15-year-old son at Kraeer Funeral Home in Coral Springs.

The Sun Sentinel broke the story, noting that Wang dreamed of attending West Point and would have been in the Class of 2025.

Information from FOX News was used in this report. "He is like the big brother everyone wished they had", said Lin Chen.

Maddox added that awards for other cadets are going through the review process, but that the Army's focus is "supporting the funerals and dignity and honor so deserved by these cadets and their families".

Nikolas Cruz, 19, is charged with 17 counts of murder for the shooting.

"I feel the family can never be the same", she said.
