Mauricio Pellegrino: Sacked Southampton boss says 'many reasons' for struggles

Struggling Premier League club Southampton sacked Argentinian manager Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday with only eight matches remaining in the league season.

However, Southampton now have only one win from their last 17 PL matches and are bang in trouble.

The 54-year-old has managed Stoke, QPR, Fulham, Man City and Blackburn without ever being relegated from the top-flight, although it's fair to say that after the sleep-inducing football under Claude Puel and Pellegrino, Hughes doesn't represent the most inspiring of appointments.

Southampton have won only once in their last 17 EPL outings, though the team have qualified for the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Marco Silva was strongly linked, but now I understand that Hughes has already had contact with the club.

But Southampton had expected far better this season, after three consecutive top-eight finishes.

Former team-mate and arguably the club's greatest ever player Matt Le Tissier believes Hughes has what it takes to save Southampton from dropping into the Championship.

"As you know, my period in Southampton has finished".

With the form Southampton have been in this year, Pellegrino's sacking has been more of an inevitability than anything else, but with only eight matches left in the season, it puts the club in an incredibly hard position. The manager is the face of a lot of decisions and actions, but I always tried to put the club first with my technical staff and the board behind me.

Of this season's contrasting fortunes, Pellegrino said: "We have been living a hard season for many reasons".

Like Hughes, Silva was sacked by a Premier League club in January - in his case Watford - and he has also been linked with a move back home to Portugal to take over at Benfica next season.
