The joint statement was issued five hours after the meeting led by South Korean Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon and his counterpart Ri Son-gwon, chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland, began at the Peace House on the South's side of Panmunjeom at 10 a.m. (6.30 am IST). The talks will likely focus on Kim's future meeting with President Donald Trump; setting the stage for the first talks between the leaders of North Korea and the United States since the Korean War.

North and South Korea have had exactly two leader summits before this, in 2000 and 2007.

On Thursday, high-ranking Chinese diplomat and Politburo member Yang Jiechi arrived in Seoul to brief South Korean officials on the North Korean leader's visit to Beijing.

He said "the history is that they couldn't be trusted" and that North Korea had in the past "reneged" on pledges over its weapons programme.

It was the North Korean leader's first overseas trip since inheriting power following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in 2011.
