Senate elections 2018: The number game

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz backed independent candidates have bagged 15 Senate seats across the country, according to unofficial results, as more results are expected to come.

PPP leader Aitzaz Ahsan, despite his party's "surprisingly good" performance in the Senate elections, congratulated PTI candidate Chaudhry Sarwar for being the only opposition member to win a Senate seat from Punjab.

The final results will not immediately show how well PML-N has done because a number of candidates were barred from running under the party's banner following Sharif's disqualification by the Supreme Court last month.

Talking to media persons outside the Punjab assembly in Lahore, the Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah expressed with confidence that all the nominated candidates of PML-N would be victorious, adding the PML-N would win all the 12 Senate seats from Punjab.

Candidates of ruling PML-N contested the polls as independent candidates after top court ruled earlier this year that all tickets issued to candidates for Senate elections by disqualified Nawaz Sharif were annulled.

A total of 135 candidates, which includes 25 women, are contesting the 52 senate seats.

Polling is taking place in Pakistan's four provincial assemblies and the federal parliament, with officials expecting final results to be announced later in the afternoon.

But the trickiest situation was in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) where 10 members of the National Assembly would elect four senators. They are not all elected at the same time: rather, half are elected at one time, and the other half three years later. The last elections were held in 2015 and the next will be conducted in 2021.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the speaker of the National Assembly, cast the first vote in the elections in capital Islamabad, the parliamentary media wing said on Saturday morning. Meanwhile, three women are contesting for two reserved seats for women.

The officials said that 46 senators will be elected by the four provincial assemblies, 2 by the National Assembly and 4 by the lawmakers from tribal areas.
