As an astrophysicist who has spent a significant fraction of my career working on the observational aspects of black holes using radio telescopes, and hoping to continue that with the billion dollar Square Kilometre Array over the next decade, Stephen Hawking's work to understand the physics of black holes is close to my heart.

Capital High School physical science teacher, DeLacey Humbert, based her thesis on Hawking's work.

The passing of the great physicist Stephen Hawking yesterday at the age of 76 fills me with sadness for many different reasons.

California Institute of Technology physicist Sean Carroll says the Nobel isn't given to the smartest scientist or the one who makes the great contribution to science.

I ran into Stephen several times when I was at Caltech (which Hawking visited regularly), but a situation never developed in which we could "chat", as it were.

"Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet".

Though Hawking rejected the conventional notion of God or a creator, he fundamentally believed that the universe and life have meaning, according to the New York Times.

Hansson read Hawking's A Brief History of Time in middle school and credited it with fueling his drive to study physics. His legacy will live on in the discoveries he made and the books he wrote, but to honor the good man behind the great mind, we ought to uphold the values he stood for.
