Anime film director Isao Takahata dies

Takahata is said to have been in poor health and suffering from a heart condition since a year ago. He died of heart problems peacefully in his home in Tokyo, surrounded by loved ones. The idea was that Studio Ghibli would "blow a new wind through the anime industry".

"No animated movie has made me cry more than this tender, gorgeous, profound, soulful and landmark film", tweeted Annie Award-winning writer-director Jorge R. Gutierrez ("The Book of Life") on Friday. Their most notable creations have been Spirited Away, Ponyo, and My Neighbor Totoro. Takahata and Miyazaki definitely revolutionized the way Anime is today and will forever be in my memory through his movies and many others. The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, his final film, received rapturous praise from critics upon its release in 2014, and was notable for being hand-drawn, rather than created using digital animation - a rarity among modern animated feature films. It was a lovable, heartwarming movie that put the company on a truly fantastic track. The duo continued to work together through the '70s and early '80s, with Takahata producing Miyazaki's acclaimed Nausicaa, which lead to the founding of Ghibli with Toshio Suzuki and Yasuyoshi Tokuma in 1985. Takahata was the greatest influence on Miyazaki, from whom Miyazaki based most of his work, and eventually they became close friends. He was 82 years old.

"We pray that he rests in peace", the studio said, adding that he would be buried in a private ceremony attended by close family. In 1988, Takahata directed "Hotaru no Haka", a film adaptation of a story written by Akiyuki Nosaka in which the director skilfully depicted the tragedies of war.
