Ball-tampering: Cricket Australia propose new player code

The widespread criticism of Australia's cricket culture following last month's ball-tampering scandal in South Africa is rather exaggerated, former captain Ricky Ponting said on Thursday.

Warner and captain Steve Smith were given year-long Cricket Australia (CA) bans after the incident against South Africa, while batsman Cameron Bancroft received a nine-month sanction. "I am truly sorry for my actions and will now do everything I can to be a better person, teammate and role model", tweeted Warner.

"It would appear that 12-month bans were severe, if you think back on what the ICC sanction was (one match for Steve Smith and nothing for the other two)", he said before Daredevils CEO Hemant Dua interrupted, restricting any further questions on the issue.

A "wide-ranging" review of the sanctions available for offences including ball-tampering has also been launched by the International Cricket Council. "It is a good thing for the sake of the game and the players that they stay away from it all now, as hard as it is going to be for them, and rebuild what has, sort of, collapsed for them", he said. "Cricket Australia has reacted to what the world has demanded".

Yet, multiple counties have been given encouragement over the possibility of taking Smith, whose ban does not - in theory - prevent him from playing professional cricket overseas.

Australian global cricketer, Steve Smith is seen as the Australian Cricket team arrive at Cape Town worldwide Airport on March 27, 2018, in Cape Town, South Africa. But it started becoming evident when Smith and Co. returned home that they didn't want to prolong the episode. Smith and Warner were later also banned by the BCCI from participating in the IPL.

The emotional news conferences were accepted by many fans as acts of contrition.

In audio obtained by ESPNcricinfo, Peever is heard on a teleconference call to the state associations on March 26 - the day after the Newlands Test concluded - making noises about wanting the game to be an encouragement to parents and their children, before lapsing into something more cynical about the public reaction to the events.

After all three players accepted their punishments, CA chief executive James Sutherland said: "These are significant penalties for professional cricketers".

"As Australians, we like to play the game hard, we like to play the game fair". World game and Australian public demanded that these players be treated in a certain way.
