DICE Reportedly Prototyping Battle Royale Mode for Battlefield V

If the reports are accurate, it'll be interesting to see how EA Dice implement a battle-royale mode in its "Battlefield" series, where two sides - or teams - of online players battle each other to complete objectives.

Quick, pick a side in Fortnite vs. PUBG, because the field's about to get a lot more crowded.

It's no secret that Battlefield 5 is under development from DICE, but what has indeed come as a surprise is that a battle royale mode is apparently being developed for the game at the moment.

Battle royale, as popularised by PlayUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite Battle Royale, is a competitive PvP mode in which 100 players drop onto a shrinking arena in a last-man-standing fight to the death, but I'm sure you already knew that. And now, we can add this battle royale thingy to our list.

What do you think about this? Editor's note: An earlier version of this commentary omitted the final two paragraphs . I don't imagine Charles Koch would be left on hold very long, but it would probably be longer than Sean Hannity is.

According to the rumors, the mode will not be available in time for the game's scheduled October 2018 release and may be released separately via a title update.

The predominance of battle royale mode rumours has some industry analysts predicting that the genre will shake out the way the MOBA genre did: a couple of titles will be successful, but most will fail. If there's money to be made or a trend to be followed, EA won't be far behind.

It is easier for Battlefield to pull off a Battle Royale mode the right way but COD does have an opportunity reinvent this genre and give us something different from the traditional Battle Royale design. EA could cancel the prototype, it could hold it off for the launch of the next Battlefield or a Star Wars: Battlefront sequel, or it could spin it out into its own game.
