Intel has scaled back its plans to produce microcode updates for some of its older processors to address the "Spectre variant 2" attack. In an update to its Microcode Update Guidance (via ZDNet), Intel has changed the patch status of several CPU families to "stopped".

Intel says it stopped developing the Spectre variant 2 mitigations for at least one of three main reasons, including that it was impractical, the CPU was not widely supported, or that customers indicated the CPUs are running on closed systems.

"As the PC gaming industry rapidly grows, Intel has seen increasing demand for incredibly fast laptops that can provide desktop-like performance for an immersive and responsive experience, including the ability to stream and record without compromising gameplay while still enabling portability", said Intel in the press release.

A third point that the chip giant makes is that numerous computers running these processors are "closed systems" not connected to the outside world and so unlikely to be exposed to Meltdown and Spectre anyway.

Having crashed systems globally with its faulty patch for modern hardware, Intel has decided not to take the risk for its older stuff and has blamed 'micro-architectural characteristics that preclude a practical implementation of features mitigating Variant 2.

Limited commercially available system software support. The company mentioned it as the first mobile Intel processor with six cores and twelve threads. It also has the new Intel Thermal Velocity Boost (TVB), which claims to offer a turbo frequency of up to 4.8GHz.

What do you think of some Intel chips not being patched for Spectre and meltdown exploits? "However, the real reason Intel gave up on patching these systems seems to be that neither motherboard makers nor Microsoft may be willing to update systems sold a decade ago", Tom's Hardware noted.

Intel has officially announced that it will not be releasing microcode updates to protect against the Spectre speculative execution vulnerability in its older processor families, including the three-year-old SoFIA Atom platform. The company has also recommended admins and/or users stop using the updates as the mitigation for Spectre v2 contained within them causes stability issues.

Fixes for Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge were released last month.
