Crowe learned to play the instrument in just a few months for his role as Captain Jack Aubrey in the 2003 movie Master And Commander. Although his divorce from Danielle Spencer was a year ago, today would have been the couple's 15th wedding anniversary.

A cheerful Crowe made an appearance after Sydney actress-singer Alisa Nasteski sang Happy Birthday and the crowd of bidders and spectators - some in formal wear, others wearing sports team-coloured beanies - gave him three cheers. "G'day folks, how you doing?" Crowe told the crowd. Titled "The Art of Divorce", it pictures a smiling, tuxedo-clad Crowe brandishing a whiskey tumbler on the catalog cover and came about, he explained in an interview with a Sydney morning TV show, because he decided "to turn something that was a little bit bleak into something joyful". Immediately afterwards, the violin - which Crowe described as "a lot very close to my heart" - became the 31st item to go under the hammer.

The auction follows Crowe finalising his divorce with former wife Danielle Spencer in December last year after nine years of marriage.

Bidders' interest had been expected to focus on the violin and paraphernalia from Gladiator, the 2000 blockbuster that earned Crowe his Academy Award for best actor.

Given the popularity of movie memorabilia-and Crowe's own star power-the auction will surely be a success.

The Gladiator "stuff" (his word for it all) could be a real pull - a replica Roman chariot, armour, weapons and two life-size prop horses.

A pair of Doc Martens boots worn by Crowe in the 1992 film Romper Stomper went under the hammer for $10,000.

Promoting his glorified garage sale on Channel 10's The Project, Crowe said he "didn't have to" sell the items because of the divorce, but it was something he "wanted to do" as a collector of many things.

But some lots failed to reach reserve, including a 2008 custom motorcycle built by California's Orange County Choppers that was turned in on a bid for 35,000 Australian dollars.
