Sanders slams Trump's proposal to rejoin Trans-Pacific Partnership

Trump's request lands at a particularly busy time for the Office of the US Trade Representative, which is in the midst of NAFTA talks and evaluating a series of tariffs Trump has threatened to impose on China.

In his remarks on Thursday, Trump cited a speech by Chinese President Xi Jinping that the USA president interprets as a signal China is about to open its markets to more US goods. There's a major first-mover advantage and U.S. companies will be left out. "But he multiple times reaffirmed the point that TPP might be easier for us to join now once the TPP-11 is aligned and we might be the 12th party to those negotiations, as opposed to the long process that it took to get to TPP".

Shortly after assuming the office, the USA president delivered on his campaign promise and pulled out of the deal, sending it into limbo.

Eleven countries signed the agreement last month.

Trump is seeking to reassure the lawmakers on proposed China tariffs. "The President has consistently said he would be open to a substantially better deal", she added.

"If the Trump administration doesn't pose too many demands, it is likely that the other TPP members will see the value of the bringing the US back into the fold", said Eswar Prasad, Cornell University professor of trade policy. The deal was aimed to strengthen economic ties between the US and 11 other Pacific Rim nations, cut taxes, and foster trade to boost economic growth. Farm state lawmakers have pushed for greater sales of the higher ethanol blend to boost demand for the corn-based fuel.

In a follow-up tweet, Trump said America's relationship with Russian Federation "is worse now than it has ever been". Trump called out Putin along with the leadership in Iran for backing Assad, who he referred to as "Animal Assad".

He also told the Council that Moscow has warned the US of grave repercussions if it carries out strikes against Syrian forces. Moscow has said its experts have not found "any trace of chlorine or any other chemical substance used against civilians".

The meetings came as an array of business executives and trade groups expressed alarm to federal lawmakers Thursday about the impact that tariffs will have on their business. "Increased economic engagement with the 11 nations now in TPP has the potential to substantially improve the competitiveness of USA businesses, support millions of U.S.jobs, increase US exports, increase wages, fully unleash America's energy potential, and benefit consumers".

China's aggressive response to Mr. Trump's tariffs is aimed squarely at products produced in the American heartland, a region that helped send him to the White House.

The U.S. and China are in the early stages of what could be the biggest trade battle in more than a half century.

Eleven other Pacific Rim countries signed a sweeping trade agreement last month that came together after the US pulled out.
