Sugar tax comes into effect in the UK

I don't know what the scale of sugar tax avoidance is likely to be, it really depends on how it is sold and the routes to market.

So the cost of 1.75ml of coke bottle will increase from £1.25 to £1.49 approximately.

It's thought that the new tax will raise £275 million this year.

Why is the sugar tax imposed? Two categories of taxation are coming into force; one which relates to drinks with more than five grams of sugar per 100ml, and another that applies to drinks that contain more than eight grams of sugar per 100ml. Tesco has reduced its own brand soft drink's sugar content so that 85 percent now have less than 5 grams of sugar and therefore won't be taxed.

What is the sugar tax?

BSDA director general Gavin Partington said: "It is important that the Government acknowledges the size of the potential side effects of this tax legislation and looks to take action to protect legitimate businesses". "Customer experience is more important than ever, so aim to offer innovative soft drinks, lower in sugar but perfectly served, to stand out from the crowd".

It is hoped the tax will encourage drinks companies to cut down on the amount of sugar in drinks, and consumers to choose lower sugar alternatives.

But, if they grow so much that they exceed the 1 million litre threshold, they will have to register for the tax within 30 days of the month's end.

These costs will also rise in pubs and restaurants.

However British chancellor George Osborne, who unveiled the tax policy, has predicted that the tax will be extended to include milkshakes with large quantities of sugar.

Sprite cut its sugar content from 6.6g per 100ml to 3.3g, while Irn Bru more than halved its sugar, going from 10.3g to 4.7g.

When the company revealed the change there was uproar, and people were reportedly stockpiling the drink before the tax kicked in.
