The International Union of Police Association votes no confidence for BSO Sheriff

After delivering a resounding vote of no confidence on Thursday, members of the Broward County Sheriff's union want Sheriff Scott Israel removed from office signifying their distaste with the leader's media-centric response to the Parkland school shooting.

If a vote of no confidence against Israel goes as the president of the Broward Sheriff's Office Deputies Association expects - an overwhelming vote of no confidence - the union plans to ask Scott to remove Israel from office.

Florida law grants the governor the power to suspend a sheriff for "malfeasance, misfeasance, neglect of duty", and appoint a replacement sheriff during the suspension period.

Bell said it was the union's first vote of no confidence against a sheriff.

Since the no confidence vote against Israel started last week, two other unions, The Federation Of Public Employees and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #53 have written letters of support for the sheriff. I will not be distracted from my duties by this inconsequential IUPA union vote, which was created to extort a 6.5 percent pay raise from this agency.

"Those who purportedly voted in this straw ballot reflect only a small number of the 5,400 BSO employees", he said.

The catalyst for the public show of hostility was the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February.

But Bell said the vote was a long time in coming and cited a number of problems over the years.

"I am accountable to the citizens of Broward County", he said.

"In fact the union boss, who asked for this vote of no confidence, wrote me a lovely letter about a year and a half ago actually endorsing me for sheriff, talking about my leadership and moral". Only the state senate has the power to remove him. "So, it's appalling and shameful, not to file a vote, but to bring in Parkland", Israel said about the Broward Sheriff's Office Deputies Association.

A union of rank-and-file deputies on Thursday afternoon will reveal the results of its "no confidence" vote in Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.

About 1,300 deputies are represented by the union.

"We ask you to start changing your policies that are absolutely failing, we ask you to change your leadership to something that somewhat resembling awesome", said Bell. And what's changed since then?

"I denied them a 6.5 percent raise, which would have been twice the amount of any other member of the agency". Israel, meanwhile, has positioned this vote as merely a means of getting pay raises - what he actually described as "extortion" - even as Bell stated pay raises were not the driving factor.

The Union head stated his primary focus is on Israel's actions following the shooting, and particularly how the sheriff verbally laid blame on one deputy on scene, Scot Peterson, who failed to enter the school and engage the shooter. Also, he said Israel says the office can not afford new guns, equipment and training for deputies but the agency underspent its budget by $100 million last year and is on pace to do it again this year.

Israel accused the deputies of ulterior motives.
