Trump blasts news media as 'fakers', defends Sinclair

A mash up of news anchors in a promo taking a stance against fake news is going viral and boy is it creepy. While in India the government is taking steps to tackle what they identify as fake news, a similar battle is being fought on all fronts, worldwide - including on behalf of the media as well as the populace and other social media networks. "The "Fakers" at CNN, NBC, ABC & CBS have done so much dishonest reporting that they should only be allowed to get awards for fiction!" he said on Tuesday.

Sinclair Broadcast Group has been the subject of widespread ridicule for forcing its local TV news anchors to read a script decrying "fake stories" and "false news".

The policy has received new scrutiny after the publication over the weekend of a video compilation showing many anchors reading the same script. Then, what they'll do is what you saw in the Deadspin video.

(A) But we're concerned about the troubling trend of irresponsible, one sided news stories plaguing our country. "More alarming, some media outlets publish these same fake stories ... stories that just aren't true, without checking facts first".

CNN showed part of a video montage posted over the weekend by the Deadspin website that showed dozens of Sinclair news readers warning about false news and saying "this is extremely risky to our democracy". While some people claimed that the entire newsroom "should walk out", another said, "Let them corrupt local TV news with mindless conservative conspiracies".

Scott Livingston, senior Vice President of Sinclair, told the Baltimore Sun that the script was used to demonstrate their "commitment to reporting facts".

Sinclair Broadcast Group is known to be close to Trump. The president singled out CNN and NBC.

Sinclair's $3.9 billion deal for Tribune, announced in May, is before the FCC and the Justice Department, where Trump appointees are leading reviews. It ordered anchors at its stations to appear in the one-minute spots and to read the same words written for them by Sinclair executives. As it has expanded, it has introduced conservative commentators to its local newscasts, including regular segments featuring its political director, Boris Epshteyn, a former Trump campaign official. Local viewers would have no idea that the message came not form local stations but from Sinclair.

Sinclair Broadcast Group owns some 173 television networks in the United States, and the message segments were repeated as frequently as possible, giving the management nearly blanket coverage in parts of America.

Among others, John Oliver skewered Sinclair's campaign during his HBO program, "Last Week Tonight", on Sunday.

(B) At KOMO it's our responsibility to pursue and report the truth. Sinclair broadcast 15 "exclusive" interviews with Trump but zero with Hillary Clinton.

The firm broadcasts free over-the-air programming, such as network provided programs, locally-produced news, local sporting events, programming from program service arrangements, syndicated entertainment programs, and internally originated programming to television viewing audiences in the communities through various local television stations.

"Over the course of my 14-year career in broadcasting, I worked for multiple corporate owners, large and small". The headline was: "How America's Leading Local TV Owner Turned Its News Anchors Into Soldiers In Trump's War On The Media". "Nothing says "We value independent media" like dozens of reporters forced to repeat the same message over and over again like members of a brainwashed cult".
