The virus is endemic to the Democratic Republic of Congo, but it has since spread to other countries in Africa. Of the 34 suspected cases, two were confirmed, 18 have been classified as probable and 12 remains suspected cases.

Yesterday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, MD, traveled to the DRC, and he tweeted about visiting a hospital in Bikoro and observing the outbreak response.

"Because it is an experimental vaccine, there are several steps to observe", Jasarevik said. Mbandaka, with a population of about 1 million people, is also reachable from Bikoro by water.

The World Health Organization has deployed 4,000 doses of vaccine along with emergency teams and equipment to the Democratic Republic of Congo to control an outbreak of Ebola, which is suspected to have infected 39 people, including 19 deaths.

"Had a vaccine been available earlier in the Ebola epidemic, thousands of lives might have been saved", Jeremy Farrar, director of the British medical research institute Wellcome Trust, told the BBC in December 2016.

Health workers may have a new weapon in their arsenal to fight the current epidemic: the Merck-manufactured rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine.

Ebola caused global alarm in 2014 when the world's worst outbreak began in West Africa, killing more than 11,300 people and infecting an estimated 28,600 as it swept through Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

The WHO was criticised for bungling its response to that epidemic, and so has moved quickly. Weller cited an Ebola outbreak nearly a year ago in the DRC that was contained quickly contained. But owing to remote geography and poor transport links, they tended to fizzle out rather than spread to become a national crisis.

Gashumba revealed there is a constant screening system at Kigali International Airport to track the outbreak from people coming from overseas to make sure the disease does not spread in the country while more operations are intensively being done on the country's borders.

Congo's nine neighbours have been put on high alert in case Ebola crosses a border, especially to Republic of Congo or Central African Republic.

The outbreak has been localized to three health areas, namely Bikoro (29 cases), Iboko (8 cases) and Wangata (2 cases). WHO experts say the outbreak has not yet met the criteria "of a public heath event of worldwide concern", which would require an emergency WHO Committee meeting.
