China plays active role in Korean Peninsula issue

On May 16th, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that V.K. Singh, the minister of state for external affairs, had embarked on a two-day trip to North Korea- the first such visit by an Indian minister in two decades.

After the USA reached out to North Korea, in a surprise development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent Minister of State for External Affairs Gen. (Retd.) VK Singh as his envoy to Pyongyang to open channels of communication. Singh reiterated India's support for the joint peace initiative of North and South Korean leaderships, encouraging both sides to continue their efforts for peace in the peninsula.

A key issue that India flagged pertained to the threat from nuclear proliferation and its linkages with Pakistan's, especially considering the role played by India's neighbour in developing the DPRK's nuclear programme.

The visit by General Singh closely followed the presentation of credentials by the new Indian Ambassador Atul Gotsurve to Pyongyang.

A North Korean Workers Party of Korea (WPK) delegation met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday, the third time Xi has met with DPRK officials in recent since late March. Experts believe that since 1970s, Pakistan and North Korea have cooperated extensively on the development of ballistic missile and nuclear weapons technologies. The North Koreans also briefed Mr Singh on the recent developments in the Korean peninsula, including the peace talks between the two Koreas.

The two leaders also agreed on enhancing people-to-people relations in the field of education and culture.

Foreign Minister Spokesman Lu Kang told reporters that the parties must express sincerity, have good will and guarantee the conditions of the meeting scheduled for June between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and U.S. President Donald Trump. In a statement issued by its First Vice-Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan on Wednesday, North Korea threatened to call off the talks if the Trump administration made denuclearisation a precondition.
