Disney's 'Avengers' tops box office after passing $1 billion

Disney and Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War continued to dominate the early summer box office, earning $112.5 million domestically from 4,474 theaters to score the second-biggest sophomore outing in history as it jumped the $1 billion mark faster than any film in history globally. The Force Awakens, which earned $149.2 million in its second weekend, still holds the record for the biggest second weekend in North America. And the film has yet to open in China.

The first of a two-part installment from the Marvel Entertainment franchise, "Infinity War" garnered $112.5 million from theaters in the US and Canada, ComScore Inc. estimated in an email Sunday. As of now, Avengers: Infinity War's domestic total stands at $450.8 million, with $713.3 million from foreign territories for a global total of $1.164 billion. As for the second best second weekend ever? Directed by Rob Greenberg and stars Eugenio Derbez and Anna Faris, the plot tells the story of a spoiled playboy from Mexico's richest family and a working class single mom of three hired to clean his luxury yacht. Only three movies have achieved that number before: the aforementioned box office juggernaut, Avatar, Titanic, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Pantelion release scored a waterlogged 30% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 45/100 on Metacritic.

In third spot was Paramount s sci-fi horror film "A Quiet Place", at $7.6 million.

The publication notes that Kimmy may live on, with talks of a doing a movie to officially wrap up the series. "But after four seasons and over 50 episodes, word is that everyone felt it was time to end the series".

And in fifth was "Rampage", from Warner Bros., at $4.6 million. In comparison to the recent Marvel flicks, War's drop was higher than Black Panther's 44%, Thor: Ragnarok's 53% and Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two's 55%. Whether it has what it takes to pass Black Panther near $700 million domestic haul remains to be seen. To date, "Black Panther" has made $693 million in North America. Both Tully and Bad Samaritan had rather small opening weekends, but they still did well enough to make it into the top 10.

The next movie in the Marvel Universe, Ant-Man and The Wasp, is not expected to match Infinity War's box office pace. Dean Delvin's thriller starring David Tennant, Robert Sheehan, and Kerry Condon has a B- CinemaScore, along with a 56 per cent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
