Durango Public Library gears up for summer reading

Children were already getting their groove on just minutes into the start of the summer reading program at Grand Island Public Library. Previously referred to as Summer Reading, this year's offering is now called Summer Quest in order to highlight an increased emphasis on activities that, in addition to reading, strengthen literacy skills.

Summer reading isn't just for the kids, though - Ascension Parish Library is introducing Beanstack this year.

Summer reading programs are supported by the Friends of the Durango Public Library, Durango Parks and Recreation and Maria's Bookshop.

The summer reading program will run to August 4.

"We've always had some adult programs going on over the summer, but I wanted to do it a little different this year and offer more", House said.

It all starts on June 7 with a princess sing-along.

The prizes can serve as extra motivation for some young readers.

Readers of all ages can participate online or use a paper reading record.

Adults will be entered into drawings each time they visit the library and check out books and will also receive extra entries for attending library programs. In connection, there will be music-related programs and stone-related events throughout the summer; Grossman noted they also were welcoming a cardboard cut-out of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to the children's section.

"We've had close to 200 children", she said. Last summer, Chambers County initiated the First Card for First Grade program, incentivising classes of first graders to all sign up for a library card for in order to win a pizza party at 100 percent participation. The system is now the largest library system in Florida by square footage and one of the busiest, with more than 7.5 million walk-in customers visiting its 38 locations annually.

Susan McKinney, the librarian at the St. Joseph Township-Swearingen Memorial Library, has been there nearly 28 years and has seen summer reading grow every year. For the baby group parents will keep track of books read to the child.

The free event includes summer reading registration for all ages, prizes and a concert by Riding Atlas consisting of teens from Davenport and Galena.
