Earthquakes follow eruptions from Hawaii volcano

Footage from a drone aired on the Hawaii News Now website showed lava incinerating trees as it crept near structures.

Now, there is a real one.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a total of eight fissures have opened as Kilauea volcano erupts and releases lava into a residential area on Hawaii's Big Island. The natural disaster, one of dozens to hit the area in 24 hours, was the most powerful on the island since 1975, the US Geological Survey said.

Though the quakes could be felt on the highly populated island of Oahu, as of 11:20 EST, no evacuations have been called for.

The Kilauea Volcano fissure that formed on the west flank of the Pu'u 'O'o cone (line of white steam) is seen in this aerial image after the volcano erupted following a series of earthquakes over the last couple of days, in Hawaii, U.S. on May 3, 2018.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the second quake wasn't strong enough to cause a tsunami, and Hawaii's Department of Transportation said no damage had been reported to roads.

The 6.9 magnitude tremors in the south-east region of the volcano led to brief power cuts and saw people running out of their houses in a panic.

Lava that spattered from a fissure ignited utility poles and vegetation Friday on Kaupili Street in Leilani Estates. Areas like Nanawele Estates, Leilani Estates and the coastal area of Kapoho could be affected by the volcanic eruption. Authorities also ordered an evacuation of Lanipuna Gardens, a smaller, more rural subdivision directly to the east.

"They just want to know what's going on because they were told it's a mandatory evacuation", he said by telephone.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. Exposure can cause irritation or burns, sore throats, runny noses, burning eyes and coughing.

Golden Knights vs. Sharks: Game 4 Prediction, NHL Playoff Odds
The San Jose Sharks need a victory here in order to tie up the series at 2-2 before going to Vegas for game five on Friday. Sharks forwards Tomas Hertl and Evander Kane both scored in the third period just to send Game 3 to the extra session.

Centered about 10 miles southwest of Leilani Estates, the quake was the strongest of a series of earthquakes and aftershocks that shook the Big Island all day. Activity picked up earlier this week, indicating a possible new lava outbreak.

"These cracks are part of the reason why we made a decision to close".

"When you are exposed to that level of SO2 in the Leilani Estates area, you need more protection than we have available to us", she said.

The Kilauea Volcano has been active for more than 30 years and its lava flows have covered 48 square miles according to the USGS. The geologic feature is the result of the island being on a "hot spot", which is a thermal plume shooting up from the Earth's depths.

Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanoes, existing in a state of constant eruption for 35 years, according to Reuters.

Two emergency shelters were opened to take in evacuees, the Civil Defense Agency said, while Governor David Ige activated the Hawaii National Guard to provide emergency help.

"Just basically heartbreak", he said of the scene.

At least 1,800 people were ordered to evacuate the area near the volcano. Post office officials said beginning today and until further notice, Hilo Downtown's P.O. box customers are asked to pick up their mail over the counter at the Hilo Main Post Office, 1299 Kekuanaoa St.

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency reported that the threat of a tsunami was low following the earthquakes, though officials warned that residents were not in the clear yet.
