Thousands of well-wishers gathered in Albert Square a year to the day suicide bomber Salman Abedi launched his attack that killed 22 people - including children as young as eight - who were at an Ariana Grande concert.

Speaking outside the cathedral, the 41-year-old from Bolton said he understood why some family members of the victims found it too hard to be back in Manchester.

'I love you with all of me and am sending you all of the light and warmth I have to offer on this challenging day'.

One of the groups performing is the Manchester Survivors Choir, a group made up of those who were there on the night of the attack, and a local school choir that performed onstage with Grande at the One Love concert.

Following the violent attack, Miz Grande not only visited with victims in hospitals, but also oversaw the One Love Manchester benefit concert.

"You who were hurt or bereaved 12 months ago today are forever part of Manchester, forever part of us", said bishop of Manchester David Walker.

They will attend the service at Manchester Cathedral alongside first responders, civic leaders and some of the scores injured in the bombing.

Those working on building sites across Manchester city centre found a unique way to observe today's one minute silence.

"This is Noel Gallagher, and I am here on behalf on Manchester Together In One Voice", said the former Oasis frontman via a video played to the crowd.

The cathedral service was shown on a big screen in the city as well as in other cities across Britain, including York, Liverpool and Glasgow.

Some laid bouquets of flowers in St. Ann's Square; others left hand-written notes on Japanese maples that have been planted to form a "Trees of Hope" trail through the city.

Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester, told BBC Radio that all those impacted would be "at the very forefront of our minds" during the day.

"Music is supposed to be the safest thing in the world".

Bells were scheduled to ring out from the town hall at 10.31pm, marking the moment the attack took place.

Later, thousands of people - including a choir of survivors - are due to gather for a concert and sing-song in St. Ann's Square.
