Kensington Palace did not release details, but photographs showed Markle, now known formally as the Duchess of Sussex, wearing to the evening reception a large, emerald-cut aquamarine ring that Diana wore often before she died in a Paris auto crash in 1997.

The site confirms that Meghan will undertake royal duties in support of the Queen both in the United Kingdom and overseas.

The British remain broadly supportive of the monarchy, albeit with a sense of mild irony about the pomp and pageantry that accompanies it, though most have deep respect for Queen Elizabeth after her 66 years of service as head of state.

Their wedding ceremony in a medieval chapel at Windsor Castle was attended by celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, American tennis star Serena Williams, David and Victoria Beckham and Markle's co-stars from the television series "Suits". Harry took Markle on a camping trip in Botswana shortly after they met and started dating.

"My baby looks handsome and she looks very happy".

Markle's first-ever role was in 2002 as a nurse on "General Hospital", she made a brief stint as a "briefcase girl" on the game show "Deal or no Deal" before appearing on the TV show "Fringe". "It was a moment for African-Americans", said Long, who had come from Houston, Texas, with her sister and a group of friends, all dressed as bridesmaids.

Elton John performed at the reception in Windsor Castle, where the canapes included Scottish langoustines, British asparagus and Windsor lamb. Megan changed into another white gown, designed by Stella McCartney, and Harry exchanged his military uniform for a classic tux.

Guests are said to have left the evening party at around 2am, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spending their first night of married life at Windsor Castle.

Observers said there would be relief within the royal household that the ceremony went off without a hitch, following the uncertainty in the run-up to the big day over whether Markle's father would attend.

Hundreds of millions of people around the world were thought to have watched the ceremony unfold on television.

After exchanging vows to love and to cherish "till death us do part", Prince Harry (33), sixth-in-line to the British throne, placed a ring of Welsh gold on Markle's finger before a congregation including Queen Elizabeth, senior royals, and celebrities including U.S. media mogul Oprah Winfrey.

Speaking to the celebrity news site TMZ from Mexico, Thomas Markle said after the ceremony, "My baby looks attractive and she looks very happy".

As Windsor began to return to normality, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to their Kensington Palace home. "I wish I were there and I wish them all my love and all happiness".

"People all over the country are going to feel inspired, they are all going to want to run out and get married now", he said. "So when she's on parade with the rest of the royal family, she will have it down to a T".

There is no word on when they will take a honeymoon, but there is much public speculation around their choice of destination.

They plan to fulfill their first royal work engagement as a married couple Tuesday, when they attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace to honor Prince Charles and his charity work.
