As reported by Deadline, Sesame Workshop, the parent company of Sesame Street, is now taking legal action against STX Entertainment for using the show in their marketing campaign.

In the lawsuit, Sesame Workshop describes the movie's trailer as "indescribably crude" and depicts "explicit, profane, drug-using, misogynistic, violent, copulating and even ejaculating puppets" along with the tagline "NO SESAME".

Sesame Workshop, the educational organisation behind the TV show, filed the lawsuit against the film's producers, STX Productions, in NY.

It follows the story of two detectives - McCarthy and a muppet played by Bill Barretta - as they investigate a series of murders in the seedy underbelly of Los Angeles.

In this undated photo, Melissa McCarthy is seen standing next to her puppet co-star in "The Happytime Murders". Sesame Workshop is now seeking a permanent injunction to prevent STXfilms from using its marks to promote The Happytime Murders, as well as unspecified damages.

The complaint goes on to allege that "a parade of social media posts, emails and public comments" indicates that the tagline "has confused and appalled viewers because of what they believe to be a serious breach of trust by Sesame by supporting this movie".

"Sesame Street", which debuted in 1969, was created to reach as many children as possible with lessons about kindness, inclusion and life skills.

"We look forward to introducing adult moviegoers to our adorably unapologetic characters this summer".

The Happytime Murders, also starring Joel McHale and Elizabeth Banks, is set to be released in August.

The movie is set to premiere in the United States on August 17.

Henson said Henson Alternative disagreed with the decision to reference Muppets and Sesame and argued against it, but "contractually we don't have the right to change it", according to the court papers.
