"So this year, we're shutting that down", Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, told the audience at WWDC 2018.

Apple and its CEO Tim Cook have been among the most outspoken critics of internet companies like Facebook and Google, whose business models rely on personal data to target ads.

In fact, Apple was fairly forthcoming in calling out the practices of "data companies", practices that put or weaken privacy of users, at its developer event. And when you use "do not disturb" during bed time, your iPhone shows a mostly black screen until you tap the screen in the morning to dive in.

Of course, this prompted a reaction from Facebook's Chief Information Security Officer, Alex Stamos who, while suggesting that Apple was singling out Facebook, tweeted that the new version of Safari will not be able to block tracking pixels or Javascript components that work as trackers too. But Apple said that the macOS will hide most of this information from websites.

While Facebook was not mentioned during Monday's keynote, Apple has criticised the social network operator recently. On March, the company grappled with the privacy scandal that was the Cambridge Analytica story which led to an "inappropriate" collection of data of upto 87 million people.

Other new features include parental controls to limit the time children spend in apps, as well as which apps they can use. But when a prompt ask users whether they want to be tracked or not in no uncertain language, most are going to say no.

Apple reveals watchOS 5, complete with new Walkie-Talkie app
Apple is also removing "Hey Siri" for its command for the Apple Watch, letting users just speak commands to the digital assistant. The first beta of watchOS 5 will likely become available to registered developers later today, without a public beta program.

Earlier this year, Apple added a new privacy panel to its operating systems, explaining in plain language why, how and what data is collected from Apple devices and by specific applications.

Our phones are the most used gadgets that we have around and we have a tendency to use apps for an extended amount of time.

"We're empowering people with the facts that will allow them to decide for themselves how they want to cut back", said Cook.

Apple Watch's operating system also upgraded to WatchOS 5.0, which included a new feature where users can press a button and send their voice directly via walkie-talkie-style communication with other Apple Watch users.

The upcoming iOS 12 mobile software will also let users better control their use of addictive apps - like Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram.
