G7 to fight protectionism, Trump threats

Leaving the Group of Seven Summit for Singapore, President Trump tweeted that he has instructed US representatives to not endorse a joint communique issued by the G-7 leaders.

Within minutes of the official release of the document, Trump attacked Trudeau on Twitter over what he described as the prime minister's "false statements" during the closing news conference - and the president announced the US would no longer endorse the communique.

He was positioned between Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has called Mr. Trump's tariffs "insulting", and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who predicted "controversial discussions" with the president on trade. "Very dishonest & weak", the president tweeted. Mr. Trump had signed the official G7 communique before leaving, but hours later, he tweeted that he had instructed his representatives "not to endorse" the final statement.

But, he said, the US could no longer tolerate "brutal" deals, even threatening to tear up the North American Free Trade Agreement if he didn't get his way.

"We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing ― and that ends", the president said.

Trudeau announced hours earlier that all G7 members had endorsed the joint communique, despite the recent trade tensions between the USA and other G7 allies.
