It added that winds could carry the ash southwest toward Bali's global airport and Java, Indonesia's most densely populated island.

Mount Agung, in northeastern Bali, has erupted with various intensities since late previous year and in December the airport was also closed for a period and thousands of residents were evacuated closer to the volcano.

The fresh activity threatens to create travel chaos after Mount Agung eruption in November stranded thousands and pounded Bali's lucrative tourism industry and wider economy.

The volcano began belching ash and smoke on Thursday and several airlines canceled inbound and outbound flights scheduled for the evening.

Denpasar has been shut after it was reported that the volcano was spewing out ash and flames.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said the airport closure began early Friday.

Earlier, authorities were forced to cancel 115 worldwide flights and 203 domestic ones, affecting almost 27,000 travellers.

The volcano is about 75km from Bali's tourist hub in Kuta.

Indonesia is the world's most active volcanic region and lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent volcanic and seismic activities.

Air New Zealand said flight NZ245 from Auckland to Denpasar and the return flight NZ246 from Denpasar to Auckland have been cancelled today. Those missed flights have been re-booked to leave tomorrow morning.

"We will try our best to find a solution so all visitors can continue their trip", Made Mangku Pastika said.
