Giant acidic steam clouds rise from ocean after lava spill in Hawaii

Clouds of steam rose over Kapoho Bay on Hawaii's Big Island after a stream of lava from the Kilauea volcano made contact with the sea on Monday, June 4.

On Tuesday, a civil defense official told Reuters that at least 60 to 80 more homes were believed to have been devoured as the lava flow, measuring about a half-mile (80-meter) wide and 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.6 meter) tall, inundated the adjacent subdivisions of Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland.

Kilauea's eruption, which entered its 35th day today has destroyed over 200 homes and other buildings, forcing thousands to evacuate and its lava is now reshaping the coastline of Hawaii's Big Island. The area is primarily home to vacation rentals, but there are a lot of permanent residences there too.

USGS helicopter footage from Monday showed lava from one fissure entering the ocean at Kapoho Bay and completely filled it, KGMB-TV reports.

No injuries were reported in the area, which had previously been evacuated. This doesn't mean all homes were affected, but authorities will have to count and match the areas with property maps.

Barbara McDaniel, a retiree who moved with her husband to Vacationland from Washington state five years ago, said they fled as soon as evacuations began, taking little else but their dog and cat with them.

According to Snyder, a number of drone operators have been cited for violating the temporary flight restriction area over lava flows. Kim and Okabe live in Hilo, the county's seat, which is more than an hour drive from the Kapoho area. Some said they were staying because they had nowhere else to go, officials said.

Fissure no. 8 is the only one now active, but walls of a perched pond from the fissure are expected to break and send more lava oozing toward the ocean.

Pomerleau said all of the vacation homes he did handyman work for are gone. It was where vacationers enjoyed tide pools, snorkeling and picnics, reported CNN affiliate Hawaii News Now.

One finger of the lava poured into a small freshwater lake, boiling away all its water late on Saturday, while another finger spilled into Kapoho Bay on Sunday night, officials said.

Civil defense spokeswoman Janet Snyder said later county tax records show the two subdivisions consist of 279 homes combined and that "many of those 279 homes are feared destroyed". "It's a handsome spot", she said Monday.

"I've been crying a lot", she said.
