The issue of US troops stationed in South Korea will not be "on the table" at a summit between President Donald Trump and North Korea's Kim Jong Un, US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said on Saturday, June 2.

"We'll be meeting on June 12th in Singapore".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said "real progress" had been made in NY talks with Kim's right-hand man, while in Pyongyang the Korean leader re-committed to "denuclearization".

"We're not going to go in and sign something on June 12, and we never were".

Both sides have committed themselves to the "denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula, but it is far from clear if Mr. Trump's mission to secure Pyongyang's complete disarmament can be aligned with Mr. Kim's quest to win worldwide respect and protection.

Trump indicated he's continuing to use a carrot-and-stick approach to diplomacy.

USA officials now expect the summit to go ahead, but they want North Korea to accept that nuclear disarmament be at the heart of the discussion - and warn that there can be no end to trade sanctions without it.

"It will be a beginning", Trump said of the summit, which aims to pave the way toward eliminating North Korea's nuclear program. Jo met President Bill Clinton and delivered a letter from North Korea's leader at the time, Kim Jong Il.

Upon arrival, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly ushered the North Koreans into the Oval Office to meet the president.

Shortly after leaving the meeting venue at the residence of the deputy U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Pompeo tweeted that the talks had been "substantive". He headed to Washington Friday morning after meeting with Pompeo Thursday in NY.

Asked about Pyongyang's commitment to denuclearization, Trump said: "I think they want to do that".

Trump first told reporters the letter from Kim was "a very nice letter. a very interesting letter" but then said he had not opened it. "Oh, would you like to see what was in that letter?" How much? How much?

"I haven't seen the letter yet". "So I look forward to seeing what's in the letter".
