Manafort hit with new charges in Russian Federation probe

Special counsel Robert Mueller has indicted a man with direct ties to both Russian intelligence and the Trump orbit: ex-spy Konstantin Kilimnik.

Kilimnik is, according to CNN, "a close business colleague of Manafort's who prosecutors have said has close ties to Russian intelligence". Originally set for July 10, the trial will begin on July 24.

A previous filing against Manafort on June 4 had accused the longtime Washington lobbyist of attempting to tamper with witness testimony, and was believed to have referred to Kilimnik as "Person A".

Kilimnik also reached out to witnesses in April. "You don't really care about Mr. Manafort's bank fraud". For example, a headline on the conservative Daily Caller website read: "Mueller issues new indictment against Manafort and Ukrainian business partner that have nothing to do with collusion".

Manafort is now under house arrest, awaiting trials scheduled for Virginia and Washington, D.C., later this year. The person identified as D1 said the contacts seemed like an effort to "suborn perjury" because he knew the information Mr. Manafort said he wanted to share was inaccurate. "We will do our talking in court", Maloni added. "I have made clear that they worked in Europe". Prosecutors says Manafort "repeatedly contacted" two people at the firm during that time and encouraged them to say they "never lobbied in the US, and the goal of the program was E.U".

Robert Mueller's office filed court papers Monday accusing Manafort of witness tampering.

Kim summit set for Singapore's Sentosa Island - White House
The Trump administration is in the midst of a peace process it hopes will end with North Korea abandoning its nuclear program. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is expected to stir up a media frenzy here.

The court filing argued Manafort did not violate the conditions imposed on him when he was placed under house arrest in October. The work is the basis for the criminal case in Washington where Manafort faces charges of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, money-laundering conspiracy and false statements.

"This could obviously put additional pressure on Manafort that could lead him to flip", Mariotti said. No charges were filed but the Ukrainian who called for the investigation seemed sure Kilimnik had links to Russian Federation.

The Manafort case though focuses on his work between 2004 and 2014 in Ukraine for pro-Russia politicians including former Ukraine president Viktor Yanukovych. The witnesses, who had worked with Manafort as he represented a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine, have told the Federal Bureau of Investigation that they believed Manafort and Kilimnik were trying to get them to lie about the nature of their work.

The witnesses would eventually rat out Manafort and Kilimnik to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Kilimnik, according to the filing, "oversaw" DMI's office in Kiev, Ukraine's capital.

On Tuesday he asked that Mr Manafort be detained in jail, claiming that he had been using encrypted communication to try to coach two potential witnesses' testimonies.

Deripaska has denied accepting the offer or receiving any such briefings.
