Firefighters plan to use propositioned sprinkler systems, fire hoses and aircraft to protect the homes.

Almost 700 firefighters backed by air support were attacking the blaze, which was 10 percent contained. Crews underwent a successful burnout operation on the southwest side of the fire overnight that lasted until midnight, Eaby said. A second evacuation check-in site is open from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. daily at the Silverton Town Hall, 1360 Greene Street in Silverton.

A red flag warning was in place from 10 a.m.to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Officials say the cause of the wildfire, which started June 1 in the San Juan National Forest, has not been determined. Smoke is expected to be heaviest in the U.S. Highway 550 corridor from Molas Pass through Durango and down to the New Mexico line, as well as the U.S. Highway 160 corridor between Hesperus and Bayfield, extending east past Pagosa Springs.
