North Korea's Kim lands in Singapore ahead of Trump summit

Today, Sung Kim, a former United States ambassador to South Korea and former nuclear negotiator with the North, will lead a USA delegation for a working group with a North Korean delegation at the Ritz Carlton hotel, Sanders said.

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States, insisting he would swiftly achieve what previous US administrations have failed to do.

The JoongAng Ilbo said North Korea and the United States, when their officials met in NY and elsewhere to prepare for Tuesday's Trump-Kim summit in Singapore, also agreed on the need for additional summits.

North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un and his attaches arrived in Singapore Sunday, all aboard a Chinese jetliner.

"I'll be on a mission of peace, and we will carry in, really-in my heart, we're going to be carrying the hearts of millions of people, people from all over the world", Trump said in an impromptu press briefing before leaving the G7 in Canada.

News that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had visited North Korea and a big photo of him shaking Kim's hand appeared on the front page of the ruling party newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun, the following day.

Both leaders have arrived in Singapore for their historic meeting.

The area includes the summit venue, Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island and the places around Shangri-La Hotel and the St. Regis Hotel where Trump and Kim are expected to stay, respectively.

Many experts on North Korea, one of the most insular and unpredictable countries in the world, remain sceptical Kim will ever completely abandon its cherished nuclear weapons.

Trump will also meet with U.S. Embassy personnel later Monday.

Trump and Kim are set to meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Singapore, which is 9 p.m. Monday on the U.S. East Coast.

Discussions would focus on "the issue of building a permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula, the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and other issues of mutual concern", KCNA said. But the president has significantly softened the USA negotiating stance in the immediate run-up to the summit, accepting the prospect of an open-ended negotiations involving multiple future summits.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe flew to Washington last week to meet with Trump before the G7 to ensure Japan's interests weren't overlooked in the summit.

Though it could mean many things, the relative speed of the reports about Kim travelling to Singapore could be seen as a sign of confidence by the North that the summit will go well.
