Officials Linking Multi-State Salmonella Outbreak To Pre-Cut Melons

More than 60 people have come down with salmonella after eating pre-cut melon from Walmart, including six people from IL, and may have been distributed at other stores.

The recalled products were distributed to stores in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio.

The Salmonella has been linked to the pre-cut cantaloupe, watermelon or fruit salad containing melon purchased at either Walmart or Kroger stores, including Jay C and Payless stores.

A multi-state Salmonella outbreak has been linked to pre-cut melons. They include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food.

Pre-cut melon sold at Walmart stores in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, or Ohio. Walmart and Kroger removed all pre-cut melon from the states where cases occurred. No deaths have been reported from the bacterial infections, but 31 people have been hospitalized.

Six cases have been reported in IL, ranging in the age from 23 to 87 years old.

The agency is conducting an investigation, and preliminary evidence indicated that pre-cut melon supplied by Caito Foods, LLC of Indianapolis, Indiana is a likely source of the multistate outbreak. Whole melons are not included. IDPH said the illness usually lasts four to seven days.

Salmonellosis is caused by the salmonella bacteria.
