But Porsche's brand image is built on track performance not just straight line acceleration so, with the Taycan, Porsche promises a "level of continuous power that is unmatched by any other electric vehicle".

The Porsche Taycan will arrive in 2019.

Porsche AG named its first auto to directly compete with electric leader Tesla Inc. the Taycan, as the German manufacturer gears up for what will arguably be its most ambitious and potentially risky vehicle project ever. The name may not mean much to us, but according to Porsche, Taycan means "lively young horse". "It's a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomizes freedom". On Friday, though, the worls at least learned a name of the vehicle that could be the first to give Tesla a run for its money.

"Our new electric sports auto is strong and dependable; it's a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomises freedom", says Porsche chief Oliver Blume. But it will run on electricity. Its two electric motors will produce a net output in excess of 600 horsepower, and it'll hit 60 miles per hour in less than 3.5 seconds.

The Porsche Taycan will offer a range of over 500 km. That's double what it had originally planned. About $600 million is for developing Taycan variants, a billion more for adding EVs and hybrids to today's product range, several hundred million to expand production sites and around $800 million for new technologies, charging infrastructure, and smart mobility.

At the Porsche headquarters in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, a new paint shop, dedicated assembly area for the Taycan, and a conveyor bridge for transporting the painted bodies and drive units to the final assembly area all are now being built. The existing engine plant is being expanded to manufacture electric motors, and a new body shop will also be developed.
