Video game addiction is now officially recognised as an illness

In the organisation's latest version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), gaming disorder has been listed as an addiction. The player will give increasing priority to gaming, so that it takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities.

Saxena said approximately two to three percent of gamers are likely affected by this condition and said many parents should make sure to consistently observe the habits of their children.

The American Psychiatric Association has not yet deemed Gaming Disorder to be a new mental health problem.

Removing the mental health label from trans identity is a powerful and important signifier of acceptance, advocates and mental health professionals say. He noted that the diagnostic criteria for gaming disorder, including preoccupation and unsuccessful attempts to control behavior, are "strikingly" similar to the symptoms of drug and alcohol addiction.

For video game addicts, it might soon be 'game over'.

The wording of the new entries has been known since January, when World Health Organization announced "problem gaming" would be recognised as a pathological condition.

A new chapter also has been added on traditional medicine. How many hours do you think is normal to play video games each week?

The WHO also classifies something it calls "hazardous gaming," which they say "refers to a pattern of gaming, either online or offline that appreciably increases the risk of harmful physical or mental health consequences to the individual or to others around this individual".

The World Health Organization has officially added "Gaming Disorder" to its worldwide classification of diseases. Game addiction however, can result in gamers spending several hours at a time in front of their screens.

ICD-11 will be presented at the World Health Assembly in May 2019 for adoption by member states, and will come into effect on January 1, 2022.

The ICD is used internationally to diagnose and codify incidents of diseases and disorders, including - though not limited to - mental health conditions.

A draft of the International Classification of Diseases manual includes a new definition for "gaming disorder" that is now pending approval.

For a diagnosis, the behavior pattern should last at least 12 months, though the World Health Organization is proposing exceptions in severe cases.

"Gender incongruence... has also been moved out of mental disorders in the ICD, into sexual health conditions", reads the WHO's release on ICD-11, available on their website. The research supporting inclusion is highly contested and inconclusive. Gaming disorder was considered for inclusion based on scientific evidence and the recommendations of experts around the world.
