The Big Mac has been a McDonald's staple for 50 years now, and to celebrate the iconic sandwich's golden anniversary, the chain wants to share one with the world.

Customers will receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac on Thursday, August 2. "We all know what the Big Mac is worth to us, but giving it its own limited mintage official celebratory coin, expands that worth giving us a collectible keepsake as well".

Don't think of this as a form of cryptocurrency. The idea suggested that burgers could help us determine purchasing power parity across the world.

"When my great-grandfather Jim Delligatti invented the Big Mac at his grill in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, he just wanted to make his local customers happy", said Nick Delligatti, fourth-generation McDonald's owner-operator and great-grandson of Jim Delligatti, the inventor of the Big Mac.

"Clearly, we've gotten a little more sophisticated in our menu development", Easterbrook told the AP in an interview.

And in 2016, McDonald's division in the United Kingdom auctioned off a 740-milliliter bottle of sauce used in the burger for roughly $95,000 on eBay.

One of the Delligatti family's restaurants celebrates the iconic sandwich and its history by doubling as the Big Mac Museum.
