Djokovic beats darkness to reach quarter-finals

He may have earned his first Wimbledon semi-final spot in three years, but Novak Djokovic wasn't a happy camper during and following his quarter-final win over Kei Nishikori this morning.

After serving his way to a 2-1 lead in the third set, Djokovic ramped up his efforts and was met head-on with Nishikori's increase in tempo, but the No. 24 seed missed three break points at 2-2 and was soon trailing. His latest foray into the final four of Wimbledon is just another addition to his now 32 Grand Slam semifinal appearances, now second on the list behind Roger Federer.

The Japanese player has already lost twice to the former world number one this year - on clay in Madrid and Rome.

Yet the 22-year-old, playing in the last 16 for the second successive grand slam, saw his hopes severely hindered by mistakes and a sliced forehand wide gave Djokovic a pair of break points - only one of which he needed. I've been building in the past couple of weeks.

Elsewhere in the men's bracket, Novak Djokovic has had a lot of ups and downs over the past few years, but he's back in the semifinal of a Grand Slam.

The No 2 seed had looked set for a comfortable afternoon when he won the first two sets, the second on a tie-break. "I don't like that", he said.

At the start of the second, Djokovic was putting Nishikori under huge pressure again, but the Japanese held firm on serve in a 10-minute game.

Kerber 2-3 Ostapenko in first set
Ostapenko, seeded 12th at SW19, threw everything at her opponent but was not able to haul herself back into the contest at all. I nearly couldn't make it to my mailbox, so it's definitely not normal for me to be in a Wimbledon final".

Djukanovic, on holiday in Greece, posted a video to social media in which he indicated that "those who say "Nole" (Djokovic) has called for support for Croatia make me mad" and called the star an "idiot" for his stance.

Rafael Nadal awaits in the semifinals after the Spaniard took the scenic route in a five-set marathon against Juan Martin del Potro; a rematch of the 2011 contest where Djokovic first tasted success on the lawns of south west London.

"I had moments where I was great, I felt like I was reading his serve, other moments where I don't know where the hell I was moving to".

Djokovic looked in control in the first set. I don't want to stop here.

Those fears dimmed when Nishikori broke Nole in the opening game of the fourth set, but again the balance tipped in the Serb's direction when he broke back in the follower. "Anything could have happened, so this is a big achievement for me to get to the semi-finals at Wimbledon". "It didn't harm the grass".

The 12th game went to deuce eight times, with Simon saving four set points, as Del Potro failed to take his chances, the worst when he put an easy volley over the baseline with the court wide open.
