Iran's President warns Donald Trump against 'mother of all wars'

His words, spelled out in capital letters in a late night Twitter message, came hours after Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told Trump that hostile policies toward Tehran could lead to "the mother of all wars".

Trump's message to Iran echoes a tweet he addressed to the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un past year.

On Monday morning, the White House released this statement from national security adviser John Bolton:"I spoke to the president over the last several days, and President Trump told me that if Iran does anything at all to the negative, they will pay a price like few countries have ever paid before".

Iran has faced increased USA pressure and possible sanctions since Trump's decision in May to withdraw the United States from a 2015 worldwide agreement over Iran's nuclear programme.

Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency quoted Mr Rouhani as warning Mr Trump on Sunday: "Do not play with the lion's tail or else you will regret it".

While European countries strongly opposed Trump's withdrawal of the USA from the Iran nuclear deal, the threat of U.S. sanctions has successfully made Tehran a pariah in the business world.

"We weren't afraid to tackle the regime at its highest level", Pompeo said in a speech in California, referring to sanctions leveled in January against Sadeq Larijani, the head of Iran's judiciary.

Trump's tweet came shortly after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered his own blistering speech on Iran's leaders, accusing the clerics that rule the country of using the country's revenue to line their own pockets and fund terrorism at the expense of average Iranians.

Based on the US official stance on sanction waivers, analysts expect Iran's crude oil exports to fall by as much as two-thirds to about 700,000 bpd by the end of the year. In May, the US left a deal which reduced Iran's nuclear activities in return for the lifting of worldwide sanctions.

Netanyahu says that Trump and his secretary of state were taking a clear position against "Iranian aggression" after years in which the "regime was pampered by world powers".

Pointing to Iran's sense of responsibility in normal situations, Rouhani, "We have been the guarantor of the regional waterway's security throughout history".

Trump's tweet appears to take the rhetoric expressed by Pompeo a step further. Trump's administration is now engaged in an effort to get other nations to join in the renewed sanctions.

Karimi reported from Tehran, Iran.

Mr Trump sent his tweet hours after U.S. secretary of state Mike Pompeo issued a highly critical broadside timed to mark the imminent 40th anniversary of the Iranian revolution.

Washington initially planned to shut Iran out of global oil markets completely after Trump abandoned the deal that limited Iran's nuclear ambitions, demanding all other countries stop buying Iranian crude by November.

He said despite poor treatment by their leaders, "the proud Iranian people are not staying silent about their governments many abuses", Pompeo said.
