The Met Office said temperatures in Santon Downham have hit the highest recorded so far this year, the day they also issued an amber heatwave warning for much of the country, including the East of England.

Professor Peter Stott, Met Office science fellow in attribution, said global temperature rises were fuelling heatwaves, and climate models had been predicting an increase in extremely hot spells for more than a decade.

"Temperatures will be even higher than the last two days, reaching highs of 31-32C, with overnight temperatures not lower than 15C".

Forecasters are advising people to stay out of the sun and keep homes as cool as possible.

The Met Office is forecasting that the warm weather will continue in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas over the coming days, with no respite from the heatwave in sight.

Temperatures are predicted to reach 35C midweek, threatening the record for the hottest July day, which was set at Heathrow in 2015 with 36.7C.

Almost all parts of the United Kingdom are seeing above average temperatures, but it will be hot or very hot towards the east or south east.
