Prosecutors: Paul Manafort says he's treated like 'VIP' in jail

The Alexandria, Virginia, detention center released an official mugshot of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort after he was booked into the jail on Thursday.

Spokesperson Amy Bertsch tells CNN he will likely be held in "protective custody status" - which means he would likely have no interaction with other inmates. He denied Manafort's request to throw out from the trial evidence investigators had obtained from his apartment in Alexandria last July.

He had been on home confinement until he was charged with witness tampering and a judge ordered him held in jail. "We will work closely with the U.S. Marshals to ensure his proper care while he remains in our custody".

In their court filing today, prosecutors sought to pick apart Manafort's arguments that he needs to delay the trial because of his jail conditions.

Since then, Manafort's lawyers have said they can not properly prepare for trial with a client jailed two hours outside of Washington, D.C.

Despite their recent complaint, Manafort's lawyers swiftly objected, citing concerns over the inmate's safety and the potential "challenges he will face in adjusting to a new place of confinement". In Alexandria, there are no private electronics for inmates, and Manafort was wearing a green jumpsuit when his mug shot was taken Thursday. "All of those defendants were housed safely in Alexandria pending their respective trials and defendant's experience at the Alexandria Detention Center will presumably be no different". In the past, the detention center housed high-profile prisoners like Robert Hanssen and Zacarias Moussaoui.

Prosecutors said that at the time Manafort was jailed June 15 and at multiple times since, they have offered to help if there are any issues with the jail location or conditions.

Manafort asked to delay the trial in Alexandria, until after he's been tried in Washington, where he's accused of failing to register in the U.S.as an agent of Ukraine, laundering millions of dollars and obstruction of justice.

The judge assured that the Alexandria jail was "very familiar with housing high-profile defendants including foreign and domestic terrorists, spies and traitors", according to the LA Times, adding on Wednesday that, "it is surprising and confusing when counsel identifies a problem and then opposes the most logical solution to that problem".

The special counsel's office is prosecuting Manafort in two separate criminal trials - one in Virginia scheduled for July 25, and another in Washington, DC, set for mid-September. Manafort's charges in both cases stem from his work for pro-Russian Ukrainian political interests.
