Serena Williams Upset in Wimbledon Final

It was supposed to be the day Serena Williams completed a remarkable comeback and claimed a record-matching 24th Grand Slam title but Angelique Kerber ripped up the script to outclass her 6-3 6-3 in Saturday's Wimbledon final.

The German, who won the Australian and US Open titles in 2016, added another to her tally with a convincing victory in the SW19 showpiece.

Serena Williams did not win at Wimbledon this year.

Kerber endured a hard 2017 after her most successful campaign the previous year and went without a tournament win for 12 months. The fact that Williams even competed in the Wimbledon final this soon after her life was at stake is incredible in itself.

An emotional Williams said: "I'm really happy to get this far". Because I learnt so much from myself, like a person, improving my tennis, improving me as a tennis player, and I think that is just the process.

Germany's Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams of the USA hold their trophies after Kerber won the women's singles final.

"When you've reached the top players have nothing to lose when they play against you", she said.

Tennis is a game of match-ups they say, and Kerber's counter-punching ways lend itself to some of the most interesting, dramatic matches. I think that's what I was doing in the past, I was limiting myself.

Kerber was in the ascendancy early and broke at the first time of asking when Williams found the net after a lengthy rally. QUOTE OF THE DAY: "If a match is 12-all in the fifth set, I don't think it needs to continue".

Croatia - the first team to earn three comeback wins in the knockout stage of a World Cup - will play in its first final. In capital Zagreb, more than 10,000 people gathered in the central square to watch the match despite rain.

"She was going out there having her mind only on the court and playing every single match her best tennis".

She briefly hit back, breaking to love in the fourth game, but then produced another error-strewn effort, including two double faults, to gift a 4-3 lead to Kerber.

The first three Grand Slams of the year in women's singles have been won by three different European women.

"I didn't know a couple of months ago where I was, where I would be, how I would do, how I would be able to come back".

Here's a closer look at the full outfit, but we'll continue to update as better photos come in.

In a role reversal from her wedding - at which Williams was a guest in May - Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, watched her friend alongside sister-in-law Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, from the royal box. That was part of a run in which she dropped 8 of 9 points. Anderson played for more than 6 1/2 hours Friday before getting past John Isner in a 26-24 fifth set; it's the second-longest match in Grand Slam history.

As the women ranked above her toppled like dominoes in the Wimbledon wind, the story became their defeat instead of the fact that Kerber was plowing through the draw.
