Fernando Hierro, the sporting director, who stood in as coach and led Spain to the last 16 where they lost to host Russian Federation on penalties, said Sunday he would not continue with RFEF.

Spain subsequently qualified from the group stage but went out to hosts Russian Federation at the last-16 stage following a penalty shoot-out in Moscow.

"The last Spanish coach declined to return to his previous position as sports director of the RFEF to seek new horizons and undertake new professional challenges", the RFEF said.

Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is to be named as the new Spain coach, according to widespread reports in the Spanish media on Monday.

Enrique has beaten off competition from an array of candidates to lead Spain, for whom he scored 12 goals in 62 games.

Rubiales had earlier on Monday said that the new head coach of Spain's national team needed to be a person of strong character.
