What North Korea actually said in last week's statement

President Trump on Thursday released a personal note from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praising the "epochal progress" since their summit in Singapore last month, despite a series of recent setbacks that have cast doubt on denuclearization talks.

Trump described the letter as a "very nice note" and said, "Great progress being made!". That was the day Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived for two days of meetings with top North Korean officials, which ended on a sour note after Pyongyang blasted the US side for issuing a "unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearization".

The letter is dated July 6.

The North Korean leader also voices hope that "the invariable trust and confidence in Your Excellency Mr. President will be further strengthened in the future process of taking practical actions".

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may have been too busy visiting a potato farm to meet US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Pyongyang's state media implied Tuesday.

The Pentagon says Pyongyang has indicated several times they have as many as 200 sets of remains that could be those of USA soldiers who died in the war.

While the details are unclear, a setback on talks over the remains wouldn't bode well for broader negotiations about North Korea's nuclear program.

"Both the U.S. and the North are still in discussion over when to meet", the official added.

It was not immediately clear why North Korean officials had not attended the meeting or whether they had ever confirmed their intention to. "We will be ready".

But Pentagon officials cautioned it is unclear just how much North Korea is preparing to hand over.

During an official visit to Britain, Trump posted images of the Korean-language letter from Kim and its English translation.

"North Korea apparently wants a USA general to appear at the table to quickly finalize the repatriation issue", the source said.
