Checking and Understanding Air Quality

Beijing's current air quality ranking is 62 as it enjoys some of its clearest skies in years after a government drive to cut back on coal burning. Health officials say those most vulnerable to health complications due to the low air quality should remain indoors until the situation returns to normal.

Individuals should consider air quality conditions before conducting activities outdoors, especially to those who are sensitive to air pollution.

The main concern today is areas of widespread smoke continuing to affect air quality and the visibility across the state. According to the Washington Smoke Information blog, there is "no significant smoke clearing expected before Wednesday for most of the state".

Forecasters are warning of unhealthy air in parts of the Pacific Northwest as winds push smoke from surrounding wildfires into the region.

The advisory runs through 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The air quality index ranges from "Good" (green) to "Hazardous", (dark purple).

Manitoba affected by BC wildfire smoke, special air quality alert in effect
The fire was discovered July 27 and has since grown to almost 85,000 hectares, or slightly larger than the City of Calgary. The haze is better in some areas, but Environment Canada is warning of reduced visibility and air quality.

CBC meteorologist Johanna Wagstaffe says the smoke has suppressed temperatures across five to seven degrees, but the fire danger is still high to extreme. Breathing it can be hazardous to your health, particularly for sensitive groups like children, the elderly and those with lung or heart disease. The agency recommends everyone stay indoors as much as possible.

Air across the region is considered very unhealthy for everyone, according to the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.

Smoke originated from BC's 600-plus wildfires burning is making it's way out east, with Alberta and Saskatchewan issusing similar alerts.

"Using an air conditioner that cools and filters air may help", stated the advisory.
