Iran Conducts Naval Exercise In Persian Gulf

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard is expected to put 100 gun boats in the Persian Gulf sometime in the next 48 hours to practice "swarm" tactics simulating actions which could potentially shut down the Strait of Hormuz, where roughly 10 percent of the world's oil passes through each year, two US officials said Wednesday.

Trump's policies are already putting significant pressure on the Iranian economy, although U.S. intelligence suggests they may ultimately rally Iranians against the United States and strengthen Iran's hardline rulers, officials say.

The name of the body of water separating the Iranian plateau from the Arabian Peninsula, is historically and internationally known as the Persian Gulf, named after the land of Persia or Iran.

The US military's Central Command confirmed to Reuters that it has seen an increase in Iranian activity, including in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for oil shipments that Iran's Revolutionary Guards have threatened to block.

Iran has repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction over US President Donald Trump's decision to pull out of an worldwide nuclear deal and reinstate sanctions.

The Strait of Hormuz is a conduit between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman which provides the only sea passage from the Persian Gulf to the open ocean.

"Iran has threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz", Mattis said.

"We also continue to advocate for all maritime forces to conform to worldwide maritime customs, standards, and laws", Urban added.

Early in July, Kazempour told Reuters that "The responsibility of paying unnecessary prices for oil by all consumers of the whole world, especially in US gas stations, is exclusively upon your [Trump's] shoulders and the price of over $100 per barrel is yet to come".

Every year Iran carries out naval exercises in the Gulf, the waterway that sits between its shores and those of Saudi Arabia. They've done that previously in years past.

Last week, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis warned Iran that shutting down the Strait of Hormuz would be considered an attack on worldwide shipping.

"If Iran tries to block the Straits of Bab al-Mandeb, it will find itself facing an global coalition determined to prevent it from doing so, and this coalition will also include the State of Israel and all its arms", Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told an audience of graduating naval officers August 1, Haaretz reported.
