Israel 'welcomes' murder of Syrian scientist - but denies any involvement in assassination

Times of Israel report say that a Hamas rocket scientist was shot dead by gunmen in Malaysia in April and a drone engineer was killed in Tunisia in December 2016. Israeli officials refused to comment about the charges.

Israel's Mossad spy agency planted the vehicle bomb which killed a prominent Syrian rocket scientist at the weekend, it is reported.

Asbar played a role in Syria's missile development program and had close links with the Assad regime and its Iranian allies, the Britain-based watchdog added.

Syria's al-Watan daily newspaper said that Asbar was killed because of his "important" work on Syrian defense systems, writing in a commentary published on Tuesday that "yet again the Israeli enemy has assassinated one of the greatest Syrian minds".

CERS has been the target of two previous airstrikes attributed to Israel, one in late April that killed a number of Iranians and another in July.

Iran had also alleged Israeli involvement in assassinating four nuclear scientists: Masoud Alimohammadi, Majid Shehriari, Rezaeinejad and Mustafa Ahmadi roshan, between 2010 and 2012. "Every time, they try to place the blame on us", Lieberman told Israel's Channel 2 News. According to unnamed officials cited by the Times, Asbar was targeted by Israel because he was helping Syria to develop long-range missiles accurate enough to target Israeli cities hundreds of miles away.

Last September, Israel nearly entirely destroyed a weapons factory in Masyaf, where Asbar was a senior manager.

The centre has always been linked by intelligence agencies to Syria's chemical weapons program, and Israeli warplanes are suspected to have targeted the centre's facility on at least two occasions over the past year, in September and July.

A succession of victories since then over both the Islamic State group and various rebel factions has extended government control to almost two-thirds of the country.
