Leaked recording: Nunes says Rosenstein impeachment would delay Supreme Court pick

Republicans need to keep control of the House to protect President Trump from the Russian Federation investigation, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes said at a recent fundraiser, according to an audio recording released Wednesday.

Nunes has been a vocal supporter of Trump, and his oversight of the House Intel Committee's own Russian Federation probe was widely seen as a counter-investigation to Mueller's inquiry - largely because of Nunes' belief that some prosecutors on Mueller's team were politically biased against the president.

It's also worth noting that Mueller and Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein, who now oversees the investigation, are both Republicans who were highly respected across the board prior to the start of the investigation. But, for House Republicans, you see a real, I think, conflict between their role as balancing out the executive branch - they are in charge of a separate and equal branch of government - vs. supporting a president whose policy goals they think they can help. But, basically, what they're saying here is this is a media invention against Mr. Nunes.

Nunes also noted that while he supports impeaching Rosenstein, he knows it would be unpopular, and can't do that until after the election: "I've said publicly Rosenstein deserves to be impeached... the question is the timing of it right before the election".

Nunes was the headliner at the $250-a-plate McMorris Rodgers' campaign fundraiser. "I don't think you're gonna get any argument from most of our colleagues".

Just days before Nunes' closed-door remarks in Washington state, a group of conservative lawmakers introduced a resolution calling for Rosenstein's impeachment, though they stopped short of forcing a vote on the matter. But ultimately let's say the Portuguese came and brought her some stolen emails.

Nunes also said that an effort by some hard-line House Republicans to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is on hold because of the election and because an impeachment debate would tie up the Senate and prevent it from quickly confirming Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh. "The question is the timing of it right before the election". If Trump wants the House Republicans to do this dirty work for him through impeachment, as explained, that can't happen until Kavanaugh is confirmed, for the reasons Nunes gave.

They said, "McMorris Rodgers sounds like she's reinforcing what Nunes is saying".

"This is all political", Nunes said.
