Mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus were recently netted in Oasis, prompting environmental health officials Wednesday to remind residents to take precautions.

Ohio's Department of Health said Tuesday two horses in Northeast Ohio tested positive for the virus that is transmitted through bites from infected mosquitoes.

The Portage County Health and Human Services Division is asking for residents to watch for West Nile after it was found in the county.

Two human cases of WNV-associated illnesses have been identified this year in CT.

"One bite from one infected mosquito can make a person sick", CVMVCD General Manager Jeremy Wittie said. However, according to the Center for Disease Control about one in five people who are infected will develop a fever and one in 150 people will develop a serious, and potentially fatal illness. In rare cases, WNV can cause severe disease with symptoms such as disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis, in-flammation of the brain, and going into a coma.
