Russian helicopter crash in northern Siberia kills 18: Ministry

Eighteen people were killed in a Russian helicopter crash on Saturday in East Siberia region, authorities said.

There were 15 passengers and three crew onboard, the airline said.

The dead were working for a subsidiary of oil giant Rosneft in the remote Vankor oil field, which is above the Arctic Circle.

The other helicopter landed safely after the incident. "As a result it fell, was destroyed and burned", it added.

The crew of the cargo-carrying helicopter were not injured and there was no adverse weather conditions, said Rosaviatsia.

UTair, one of Russia's largest airlines, operates an extensive fleet of helicopters serving Siberian oil fields as well as fixed-wing flights within Russian Federation and to global destinations, mostly in the former Soviet republics.

The helicopter was reportedly taking workers to an oil station.

In April, a Mi-8 helicopter crashed in far eastern Russian Federation, killing six people.
