Officials said a 4-year-old girl died after she was thrown into the waters of a Tampa river.

Authorities responding to reports of a child thrown into the river found the unconscious girl about 30 minutes later. The girl was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital.

The event happened Thursday afternoon to the horror of witnesses who watched the woman wading in the waters of the Hillsborough River and called authorities.

They added: 'Then Denson began to scream, too, as she picked up the girl, pulled her close to her chest and walked farther from the riverbank into deeper water'.

"Eventually, we just saw the scuba divers out there pulling up with a body", said resident Romano Muniz.

From her third-floor condominium unit near the river, Vicki Walker took cellphone images of the curious site of a woman in the water and shared the pictures with Tampa Bay television station WFTS.

She said she didn't see a child, but thought something wasn't right.

This is not the first time someone has allegedly drowned a child in a Tampa-area river. Two witnesses said the child was "forcefully pushed" into the backseat. It was unclear whether she had an attorney.
