US Believes North Korea Still Building Missiles

The lack of progress has been a source of concern for many observers, especially as global sanctions are beginning to ease and news reports indicate that North Korea is continuing its nuclear and ballistic programmes.

Officials on condition of anonymity told The Washington Post that North Korea was intending to deceive the United States by misinterpreting the number of research facilities and warheads, and claiming that their country had achieved complete denuclearisation.

The Washington Post reported that North Korea appeared to be building one or two new liquid-fuelled ICBMs at the large research facility on the outskirts of Pyongyang.

The findings are the latest to suggest ongoing activity in North Korea's nuclear and missile facilities despite arms talks with the United States and a recent summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump.

During a historic summit with Trump in June, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un vowed to "work toward" the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

"We see them going to work, just as before", one USA official told the newspaper.

He declined to answer questions about whether the North's nuclear program was still advancing and whether Pyongyang was looking to acquire ballistic missiles that could be launched from submarines.

Narang said the aim of such a strategy would be to obtain sanctions relief, while still retaining a deterrent - what he called "the best of all worlds for North Korea". He said Kim understood the US definition of denuclearization and that the North was not taking the Trump administration "for a ride".

The Rodong Sinmun, North Korea's official party newspaper, accused Seoul of "wasting time" waiting for sanctions to be lifted only after denuclearisation is completed, without "taking a single action" on its own.

First, one thing that has changed is this: in his call for "final, fully verified denuclearization", Pompeo dropped the word "irreversible" in his description of the denuclearization the USA seeks from North Korea.

Sohae has been the main site for North Korea's satellite launches since 2012.

"It's clear to everyone", he told Pompeo at the July 25 hearing, "that North Korea's dismantling of an outdated missile test facility, as well as a previously dismantled ICBM assembly building - which can be rebuilt within three days - are empty gestures, and not indicative that North Korea has changed its tune". However, their site has also confirmed continuing improvements at both plutonium processing and solid rocket production facilities. On Tuesday, North and South Korean athletes trained together in rowing and canoeing in southern South Korea.
