Defense Secretary James Mattis and Pence spoke at the Pentagon today in advance of the release of the Defense Department's Space Force implementation plan.

"China and Russian Federation have been conducting highly sophisticated on-orbit activities that could enable them to maneuver their satellites into close proximity of ours, posing unprecedented new dangers to our space systems", he said.

Trump has been talking about a "Space Force" for months like an excited ten-year-old. Much of the military's current space power is wielded by the Air Force Space Command, which has its headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Yesterday the Trump campaign (which is still in operation, and taking in money) revealed a set of Space Force logos.

Before Trump's announcement in June that he wanted a Space Force, Mattis and Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson had cautioned against creating new Pentagon bureaucracy to address space issues.

First, the report calls for the creation of the U.S. Space Command, a new unified combatant command for space.

Trump 2020 re-election campaign manager Brad Parscale reportedly emailed supporters this week, asking them to vote on a Space Force emblem for future use (i.e. merchandise sales). On the 15th of August, 1998, it was re-designated Air Force Space Command Space Operations Squadron - and it's rolling with the emblem you see here. These units provide space capabilities including "services, facilities and range safety control for the conduct of DOD [Department of Defense], NASA and commercial launches" of satellties, according to AFSPC's website.

Here's what taking Tesla private means for the company and Elon Musk
Going private is one way to avoid scrutiny by the public market as Mr Musk and the company tackle those challenges. Compliance experts are still arguing about whether Musk could face official censure.

Afterwards, in an apparent sign of approval, Mr Trump tweeted: "Space Force all the way!"

The Space Force plan was praised by iconic American astronaut Buzz Aldrin, one of the first men to land and walk on the surface of the Moon.

The early version of the U.S. Air Force existed as the U.S. Army Air Corps, an aerial warfare sector of the U.S. Army. He's more recently said he's "in complete agreement" with Trump, though it's unclear if he's actually come around on the Space Force idea. It also oversees Air Force cyberwarfare.

Vice President Mike Pence urged Congress to establish a sixth branch of the military dedicated to space in a speech that outlined the emerging threat of American adversaries turning space into a warfighting domain.

Foster conducive domestic and worldwide environments for space development.

Pence, who we really hope knows that Star Wars is a fantasy movie and not a documentary, said the time had finally come for the military to take charge in space after the environment has turned from "peaceful to contested" to "crowded and adversarial".

The former official said the creation of a separate Space Force will create more red tape, not less. As the vice president was speaking, the Pentagon sent Congress a detailed report on the establishment of the Space Force.

"We have been warning for years of the need to protect our space assets and to develop more capable space systems", they said in a joint statement.
